Veeam Relies On AWS To Offer Continuous Data Protection Backups

The WannaCry ransomware attack has left a trail of destruction in its wake, and companies like Veeam are now stepping up to offer a continuous data protection backup solution powered by AWS.

This, the company announced alongside its flagship product, version 10 of the Veeam Availability Suite.

The version 10 upgrade brings to the table new physical server and Network Attached Storage (NAS) support, along with native object storage with broad cloud object storage capabilities. On top of this, is further availability in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud.

But the highlight of this new arrival is the new Veeam Continuous Data Protection (CDP) that allows for what is very much a near-continuous replication of workloads in the cloud every 15 seconds.

This, the company says is the key to providing that Always-ON availability it is striving for.

Peter McKay, Co-CEO, talked about this on the main stage at VeeamON, the company’s annual conference, revealing that this new version comes with what is the next big extension of their platform, expanding the vision of appealing to any cloud:

“Veeam’s vision is to provide always-on availability in any cloud across the board. Private, public, hybrid cloud – it doesn’t matter.’

Vice president of system engineering, Scott Lillis, used Hurricane Sandy as an example of how CDP can mitigate the disasters that may occur:

“If you are based in the [North East] and your systems went down for four days, maybe the customers you have in that region would have some empathy. But, if you have customers in California, they may have heard about it on the news, but they aren’t really going to care. They aren’t going to stand their banking being down for half a week.

The point of tolerance for that sort of outage is growing smaller and smaller. You need to have a plan B, and [Veeam CDP] leaps that forward quite a bit. It allows everyone to have access to this type of technology that has been historically pretty expensive.”

According to the company, the CDP solution is designed to be a much better option than the current system that uses snapshots to protect and backup workloads. While the snapshot system was the first step in reducing the cost of doing disaster recovery, CDP will reduce the costs even more substantially.
