General Electric Picks AWS As Its Preferred Cloud

A coup! In refining its digital strategy, General Electric has made the decision to double down on what works. Which, in this case is AWS, the Amazon Web Services cloud platform.

The company has chosen the Amazon cloud as its preferred cloud provider going forward.

Amazon shared the good news this past Thursday, revealing that GE actually begun its enterprise wide migration to AWS in 2014, and continues to migrate thousands of its core applications to the leader in public cloud.

GE businesses like GE Power, GE Aviation, GE Healthcare, GE Transportation, and GE Digital already run several cloud applications on AWS.

Chris Drumgoole, CTO and Corporate VP at General Electrics:

“Adopting a cloud-first strategy with AWS is helping our IT teams get out of the business of building and running data centers and refocus our resources on innovation as we undergo one of the largest and most important transformations in GE’s history. We chose AWS as the preferred cloud provider for GE because AWS’s industry leading cloud services have allowed us to push the boundaries, think big, and deliver better outcomes for GE.”

It was reported in August that GE was undergoing a major shift in its digital strategy, foregoing its initial plans to build its own datacenters to host the GE Predix Cloud. However, the industry titan abandoned those plans about a year ago, opting instead to rely on AWS.

The company currently has more than 2,000 cloud hosted apps and services on AWS right now, and this is a figure that is set to rise in the near future.
