AWS, Microsoft Team Up For Deep Learning With Gluon

AWS and Microsoft, the two cloud archrivals, have joined hands for a good cause. That being a new deep learning interface called Gluon, which both companies will collaborate on.

As noted, this solution is designed for developers of all abilities to build and run machine learning models for their apps and other services — irrespective of their knowledge and skill level when it comes to AI.

Gluon is a big step in simplifying artificial intelligence systems, and it does this by bringing together training algorithms and neural network models, the two keep components in a deep learning system.

Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of Amazon AI:

“The potential of machine learning can only be realized if it is accessible to all developers. Today’s reality is that building and training machine learning models requires a great deal of heavy lifting and specialized expertise. We created the Gluon interface so building neural networks and training models can be as easy as building an app. We look forward to our collaboration with Microsoft on continuing to evolve the Gluon interface for developers interested in making machine learning easier to use.”

This is not the first time that the two technology giants have collaborated on AI initiatives, as both companies work together in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

In fact, it was only last September that Amazon and Microsoft, along with Google, IBM and Facebook announced what is called the Partnership on AI to collaborate more on research and best practices in this newly emerging area.

Will be interesting to see whether other companies, the likes of Google, IBM, Oracle, and Alibaba, join Amazon and Microsoft on Gluon. The two biggest cloud providers are already on board, and it only makes sense for the smaller competitors to make the call.
