Internet of Things has been around for a while, but its adoption is still not tracking as high as it could be. AWS wishes to change that with Lambda, which it is now pushing as a way to build and manage backend services for IoT workloads.
In turn, the company hopes, this will also boost cloud IoT adoption.
The wide variety of disparate devices, tools and programming models is perhaps the biggest hurdle in the adoption of IoT. However, the AWS model based on Lambda has a solid shot at finding an audience among developers and facilitate more AWS IOT projects among developers.
AWS Lambda is, basically, a functional programming models that enables developers to code logic for Internet of Things applications that could work either on premise or on the cloud.
IT teams can use this to develop and test new IoT applications.
Amazon has technologies like AWS IoT Button and Greengrass available here, as well as its own set of code, tools and guides that interoperate to support Lambda for the various backend features for the IoT platform.
The AWS IoT Button, for example, is a simplified use for AWS IoT designed to alter the retail focused Dash button and adjust it for developers. Enterprise IT teams can actually program button pushes to virtually any action on AWS.
From turning appliances on and off to notifications and counting events.
While AWS Greengrass takes the power and functionality that Lambda offers to IoT gateways that are installed in the field, thereby enabling developers to use hybrid cloud architectures for fleets of IoT devices that either operate independent of the cloud or are sporadically connected.
