But competitors are making moves, and we could be in for a rather interesting future if cloud providers like Alibaba and IBM have their way. AWS, for the time being, still dominates this market.
This is, according to Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant report.
Which notes that Amazon Web Services leads the cloud based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) market, and is followed by Microsoft Azure and Google. In fact, AWS and Microsoft are generally viewed as the default strategic enterprise cloud partners.
However, companies like IBM and Alibaba have both made noticeable moves forward, even as both these solutions have their limitations, according to the market analysis firm.
Alibaba, for example, is unproven outside the Chinese market, while IBM is criticized for its lack of innovation in this space. As an example, Gartner notes that IBM has not made any improvements to the SoftLayer infrastructure since buying it in 2015.
As for Google Cloud, the firm notes that this platform is also emerging as a key challenger, and is listed as a good option, particularly for cloud native companies.
There are a few changes since Gartner’s last report, most notably the fact that AWS if further ahead now, while Google has gained significant ground and stands alone in the Visionaries quadrant after it began a hard enterprise push in this space two years ago.
AWS dominance is, of course, partly due to the fact that it got to the market first, but Gartner also notes that the market leader has made the process of migrating to the cloud easy, which has helped it stay on top of the competition.
The firm does believe that considering the huge potential of the cloud market, it is likely that more than one leader can prevail here. But that is something that only time will tell.
