Hope you’re in the mood for some scientific news! Edico Genome, a company known for its DNA sequence processing products, has launched the DRAGEN Bio-IT platform on the Amazon cloud.
The AWS marketplace, rather.
This has been enabled by the recent general availability of the EC2 F1 instance type.
These instances are powered by Xilinx Virtex UltraScale+ field programmable gate arrays, FPGAs as they are more commonly known, and are designed to provide capabilities for hardware acceleration of big data applications like genomics.
With this integration, the accuracy, speed, flexibility and low cost of DRAGEN is now available for customers to be accessed on the AWS Marketplace.
Pieter van Rooyen, CEO Edico Genome:
“The availability of DRAGEN’s genomic analysis applications on AWS Marketplace allows our customers of all sizes to tap into the enhanced accuracy and speeds provided by DRAGEN without the upfront onsite investment. Our goal is to provide organizations of all disciplines and throughput volumes with access to the tools needed to accelerate and advance their work. As we continue to expand our cloud portfolio, we’ll work with AWS to make more of our solutions available on AWS Marketplace.”
Although FPGA technology has been around for quite some time now, its application in the cloud is now picking up. That’s because speed here, directly translates into cost, and platforms like AWS provide a highly efficient solution for researchers.
Particularly as far as cost is concerned.
Customers can program the Amazon EC2 F1 compute instance to create custom hardware accelerations, and each instance includes a local 64 GB DDR4 ECC protected memory, along with a PCIe Gen3 x16 connection.
